A. Hamilton-Wenham Profile 

We summarize the data and percentiles for the Hamilton-Wenham School District and the towns of Hamilton and Wenham in this section of the report.  Percentiles are used to compare Hamilton and Wenham’s data for each measure to our comparison group of districts and towns.  A percentile is a value on a scale of one hundred that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. 

School District Profile 

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District ranks in the middle third (34th to 66th percentile) of our comparison group in seven of the 11 School District measures. 

The District ranks in the lower third (0 to 33rd percentile) for three measures…

§         FY 1997 to 2002 Average Teacher Salary 

… and inches into the upper third (67th to 100th percentile) for one measure: 10th Grade MCAS scores.

Town Profiles 

Turning our attention from the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District to the two separate towns, the data shows some similarities and important differences between Hamilton and Wenham: 

The two towns are similar in their:

  • Median Home Price - Percent Change from FY 1998 to FY 2003, with both towns increasing over 80% (Wenham’s 87% placed the town in the 89th percentile, vs Hamilton’s 81% increase which was in the 62nd percentile of comparison towns)
  • Median Residential Tax Bills (both in the middle third of comparison towns)
  • Income per Capita for FY 1999 (both in the middle third of comparison towns)
  • Residential plus Open Space Levy as a % of Total Town Revenue (both in the top third of comparison towns)

The two towns differ in their: 

  • Median Home Price – Wenham is about $100,000 higher, and in the top third of comparison towns
  • Percent of Total Town Expenditures Spent on Schools – Hamilton is higher (63.2% vs Wenham’s 48.8%), and is in the top 10 percent of comparison towns.
  • Police Officers per 1000 – Wenham is almost two police officers per 1,000 higher, and is in the top 10 percent of comparison towns.
