Drop out rates are
notoriously difficult to measure. The DOE attempts to improve the accuracy of
the data by adjusting for students who eventually return to school. This
measure takes the analysis one step further and uses annual MADOE data and
averages the adjusted dropout rate over a five year period. The “Average
Adjusted Dropout Rate from 1999 to 2003” was lowest in Weston, and highest in
Beverly. Hamilton-Wenham’s measure was 0.54 dropouts per 100
students (65th percentile).

MA DOE. A
dropout is defined as a student in grade nine through twelve who leaves school
prior to graduation for reasons other than transfer to another school and does
not re-enroll before the following October 1. The dropout rate is the number of
students who drop out over a one-year period, from July 1 to June 30, minus the
number of returned dropouts, divided by the October 1 enrollment.
Calculation:
Sum of Annual Adjusted Dropout Rates for FY 1999 through FY 2003, divided by 5
Note:
The bars and numbers in the chart above present the data values reported for
each school district. The percentiles noted in the commentary at the top of the
page indicate the proportion of the reporting districts that reported data equal
to or below the level reported by the given district.
