I've been working on a new website for CSC.  It's about 50% complete, and you are welcome to take a look around.  It's a Content Management System (CMS) which is capable of doing more than we could ever make use of.  The primary reason I went to all this trouble was to allow the site to have more features that are integrated into the site;  Some ideas that come to mind are:

  • Allow members to log into their section where they can:
    • Manage member details, password, etc.
    • Post information about their organization
    • Submit a news article or announcements
    • Submit photos, etc.
  • Integrate a Community Forum to foster a conversation about topics of interest to our two towns.
  • Integrate a Community Calendar which will allow non-profit and community service organization to schedule events years in advance, meanwhile being able to see what all the other organizations have planned.  This is a good way to avoid unexpected competition!
  • Integrate a special news module that ties together creation of the Update and the news items you will see on the home page.
  • Community Gallery - This may take a while to get going, but my goal is to have a Gallery where residents can view, post and comment on photographs taken locally.  We could have contests, and we can take sample shots and have them show up in a rotating flash gallery on the home page.

The basic structure of the site is in place, but there is not much in the way of content yet.

Beta Website! - Temporarily located at www.hwcsc.info/joomla, until we shake the bugs out.  You can register here if you want, it won't gain you much yet.

Visit the new website at www.hwcsc.info/joomla (beta)

Community Forum - Then there's the Community Forum which is located at www.hwcsc.info/joomla/smf.  This forum is starting to pick up some action, it's great to see people making use of it.

It's devoted to all things related to our two towns.  Anyone can read the messages, and registered members are welcome to comment on existing topics, or can post something new.

For now we are experimenting with the registration rules:

You can register using your name or you can use an alias.  The only person that knows who is registered is the administrator who is sworn to secrecy!  Do you want to comment on something but would rather not have your neighbor know it's you?  It just takes a minute to register.

Generally, the site is set to accommodate most accessibility needs.  You can enlarge or shrink font size, you can take up the whole width of the page, or shrink it to 800 px wide.  There are build in tools that will allow you to email an article to a friend, or generate a pdf file.  As the administrator, I can move content around to suit the needs at the moment.  It's just too much to describe, you'll just have to join up and stay tuned!
